Han Yu Qiao - Chinese Bridge

On Friday 2nd July, we went to the Nationa Wine Centre and attended the Han Yu Qiao event, in English meaning Chinese Bridge: a chinese speaking competition for Secondary School students.

It was a very successful event and contestants performed speeches and traditional cultural acts showing their understanding of the Chinese culture - a very multicultural event indeed!

NEO voices had the opportunity to interview Mr Ji De ZHANG from the Embassy of P.R.C in Australia and Mr Yu Feng DOU from the Confucius Institute.

Joe's farewell

We organised a farewell for him after the show (...with cake!)

Joe has helped us and our show in many ways in the past few years; we thank him for all the work and effort he has given to NEO Voices.

Refugee Week (June 20th-26th)

"Freedom from Fear"

This week is the official Refugee Week in Australia. Run by the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA), Refugee Week provides a platform where positive images of refugees can be promoted in order to create a culture of welcome throughout the country.

When refugees flee, they are forced to abandon everything they know and love. They are separated from family members, lose belongings, are left with little or no money. Most have no idea what kind of future awaits them.

In seeking refuge in another country refugees are hoping to find freedom from that fear. They are looking for the opportunity to lead a normal life, as part of a community, where they can live in safety and security, find work and send their children to school.

In choosing the theme as "Freedom from Fear", RCOA are hoping to draw attention not just to the fear that compels refugees to run, but the relief they feel when they are welcomed into another country and given the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

Last Saturday, 23rd February we had an opportunity to meet and talk to some of musicians that are traveling with Carlos Santana. They are in Adelaide for a Concert at the Clipsal-500.

Phil, from the MCCSA arranged the meeting with the musos at Enfield Community Hall where some young people from West African backgrounds were putting finishing touches on their website - which will have forums and other useful functions. (Phil is helping them out)

Anyway, some of the young people already involved with NeoVoices Radio program or have appeared in our shows are also Hip Hop dancers and musicians (I mean rappers as well - they practice every Saturday at Inadifs Studios).

Immanuel who is a member of NeoVoices and his mates dropped a few verses and some sweet melodies for the Santana crew. And no doubt the guys were impressed... in return they gave the boys some good advice - that if they have decided to pursue music career and if they want to make it they have to focus and never give up!

We all had to listen. When a guy like Tony Lindsay (been singing for 44 years! played with Santana for 22 years! got involved in Dancing with the Stars... etc, etc) gives you an insight about something to do with singing you have to pay attention.

And Benny Rietveld (plays Bass)- sort of youngish and cool said "if you are serious about music practice everyday, carry with you something that you can record your ideas as they flow, if you know how to write notes then you gotta have pen and a pad, whatever, and be ready all the time to go into the studio and record or to do any job... commercials on radio, TV... whatever...

Jeff Cressman (plays trombone) also dropped some wisdom, serious stuff ... about music.

Abraham and Nelya proudly showing their award... The 2007 Multicultural/Ethnic Youth Radio Program of the Year. The award was announced in Brisbane in November '07 but for the Adelaide folks... we had to wait a little until at the RADIO ADELAIDE END OF THE YEAR PARTY! on December 6.
On the same evening Enayat received his Certificate, it is official - he has basic radio skills, he can hold the fort at any time, anywhere, give him the desk, give him the mic! Congratulations Enayat!

Nelya debuts at Neovoices as ShopFront visits Radio Adelaide

Veteran NeoVoices presenter, Abraham Kon Alieer(right) turns for a photo with a new member in the NeoVoices Team - Nelya Valamanesh (left). Nelya is working at the moment but wants pursue a career in the media later on. Apart from her natural radio voice she has already made a noticeable impact with her brilliant selection of music - from French Hip Hop to electronica to pop.

Nelya had a chance to shoot a question or two when the Non-English background/CALD Community Health Worker from ShopFront Salibury, Mujahid Ahmed visited Radio Adelaide to talk about Shopfront's youth services on Monday 18th June.
